Winter Nail Care Blog

SA winters are dry, so we all need to lather on hand cream. Whether you like your nails short or long, decorated or plain, the cold, dry weather has an effect. Just like your skin and hair, nails are affected in winter. We also need to consider the constant handwashing and use of sanitisers, nails may be brittle. That’s why it’s a good idea to try keep your hands moisturised at all times. Another tip would be to try to wear gloves when doing house chores like washing clothes or doing the dishes.

This damages the top layer of your nails and makes the nails weak and vulnerable to splitting, cracking and breaking. Soaking off in a soak off bowl, or with the reusable clips is important.

Use Vaseline around the cuticle during gel soak-off

If you are worried about the cuticles being dried out by the acetone you could possibly apply Vaseline around the nail to help protect the cuticle and to prevent the absorption of the acetone.

File in one direction to minimise friction

Filing in different directions causes friction which leads to easy breakage and build-up which can split the nail tip. Never use a file to buff the surface of your nails as this would remove layers and weaken your nails, just go over your nail lightly with a buffer block during nail prep.

Nail shape is vital

The shape of a nail is vital to the nail breaking or making it. We suggest that people who have weaker nails should use a rounder shape, as the squarer shapes tend to hook and tear which leads to nails breaking. Changing your shape is also one way to stay ahead of trends so step out of your comfort zone and reap the rewards of longer nail
